Let’s be real, Earth Day sneaks up every single year. One minute you’re focused on testing, behavior, and spring chaos… and the next, you’re supposed to have meaningful, engaging Earth Day lessons ready to go.
If you don’t have time to plan a full unit, don’t worry. You don’t need one.
Here’s a simple, low-prep 3–5 day Earth Day plan that keeps your students engaged and hits reading, writing, science, and creativity without overwhelming you.
DAY 1: BUILD BACKGROUND WITH A SIMPLE READING LESSON
Start the week by helping students understand what Earth Day is and why it matters.
Keep it simple with short Earth Day reading passages with comprehension questions.
This builds a strong foundation for the rest of the week without extra planning.

DAY 2: LEARN THROUGH VIDEOS AND ARTICLES
Now that students have some background knowledge, deepen their understanding.
This is a great opportunity to have students work in small groups, partnerships or independently to research Earth Day topics through videos and articles. The best part, it is ready to use!
Assign as much or as little as you want. (Hello differentiation!)

DAY 3: WRITING AND REFLECTING
Now that students have a decent understanding of Earth Day, this is the perfect time to add in opportunities for students to share their knowledge.
An Earth Day writing menu is a powerful way for students to show their thinking while staying focused on the topic. By offering choices, students stay engaged and take ownership of their writing, all while exploring important Earth Day ideas.

DAY 4: VIDEO OF THE DAY
Another meaningful option is a Video of the Day prompt. Students watch a short, Earth Day-themed clip and respond to targeted writing prompts. This works so well because every student experiences the same content, but their responses reflect their own unique thoughts, perspectives, and ideas.
Take it a step further by giving students the chance to turn and talk with the Video of the Day and let students discuss what they notice, think, and wonder. These quick conversations expose students to new ideas and different perspectives, helping deepen their understanding in a simple, meaningful way… a win-win for everyone!

DAY 5: PICTURE OF THE DAY & ACTIVITY
By the end of the week, students will have built new knowledge while strengthening their reading skills. One meaningful way for them to showcase what they’ve learned is through a Picture of the Day activity, where they can apply their understanding and respond with thoughtful observations and ideas.
These images, paired with thoughtful prompts, encourage students to think more deeply about Earth Day and what it truly means. Picture of the Day is a fun and meaningful way for students to share their understanding, whether through writing or class discussion, and reflect on what they’ve learned.
An Earth Day activity is the perfect way to wrap up the week. It gives students a chance to show everything they’ve learned in a different, creative way. Not only does it reinforce key concepts, but it also keeps learning fun and engaging!

You don’t need complicated plans or hours of prep to make Earth Day meaningful. With a simple structure that includes reading, writing, discussion, visual learning, and creativity, your students can develop a real understanding of why taking care of our planet matters. The best part? You can do it all without adding extra stress to your already full plate.
