Election Day Activities and Read Aloud

It’s such a fun time of year in the classroom! November brings the opportunity of many fun and informative read-alouds. This year is special, because it is election year. I am excited to share this book with you, as well as other election based books and activities! (and a freebie!!)electiondaybooks

If I Were President is a great book to introduce the Presidential Election to your students. This Election year is a great teaching point in your classroom. It is the first election your students will remember, most likely. This book provides helps you to discuss presidency in an easy way for your students to understand. It discusses the duties of a president in a fun and light hearted way.  2

I plan on using this book to introduce my Election Day unit. I also use Grace for President with these activities; you can read more about that book here! These activities go great with any Election book! I recently added this flipbook to my pack as well. It is a mini flip book and oh so easy to use as a review or intro to your lessons! The flipbook is specific to this election year and provides space to discuss the candidates. In my classroom we will focus on the facts of each candidate. This could get tricky, but it’s a good conversation to have!

electionflipIncluded in this pack of resources are some Election Day passages, vocabulary cards, and comprehension cards (for Grace for President) that I love putting in stations. It is a great way to reinforce the concepts throughout that week/unit. You can grab the “If I Were President” writing page for FREE HERE! See this resource here! one

Some of my other favorite read alouds for this time of year include:

–Vote!; helps students understand the process with a funny twist using the candidates’ pets

–E is for Election Day; each letter of the alphabet represents something about the electoral process. It has pictures and a paragraph explaining different things in a way for students to understand

–Honest Abe’s Guide to Presidential Elections; how presidents are elected and discusses the history of past elections

–Bad Kitty for President; a fun and silly story about elections
